This week, Welsh Labour’s First Minister Carwyn Jones set out his commitment to supporting families in Wales through the Welsh Government’s £42 million a year ‘Families First’ programme.
Speaking at a special event in Cardiff, he outlined how the Welsh Labour Government is creating an integrated, whole-family approach to supporting families in Wales. ‘Families First’ is aimed at improving the way agencies work together and places a clear emphasis on early intervention for families, particularly those living in poverty, to help stop problems from escalating towards crisis.
As part of ‘Families First’, Wales is the only country to require all local authorities to operate a ‘team around the family’ model, which encourages organisations to work together to assist families and help them address the breadth of challenges they can face. The Welsh Labour Government is providing £42 million during 2012 -13 for the programme, with the figure set to increase to £43.4 million in 2013-14.
