MIKE HEDGES MS WELCOMES CELEBRATES WORLD MILK DAY
WORLD MILK DAY IS HELD ON 1 JUNE EVERY YEAR AND THIS YEAR, SWANSEA EAST MS, MIKE HEDGES CELEBRATES AN INDUSTRY CRUCIAL TO WELSH AGRICULTURE
Speaking from his Morriston Office, Mike Hedges MS Said…’ Dairy farming forms only a small part of the economy of my constituency with around a dozen registered farms in Swansea East. Nevertheless these farms provide a significant contribution to the local economy and we should all do what ever we can to support local and Welsh Agriculture.
Milk is the fifth largest provider of energy and the third largest provider of protein and fat for humans. “Milk and dairy products are nutrient-dense foods supplying energy and significant amounts of protein and micronutrients, which are essential to reduce hunger and malnutrition particularly amongst the most vulnerable such as pregnant women and children,
In addition to providing children with a variety of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients to keep them healthy, milk is especially important to help build and maintain strong bones.
“Milk is an important source of healthy nutrients including calcium, magnesium, zinc, phosphorus, iodine, iron, potassium, folates, vitamin A, vitamin D, riboflavin, vitamin B12, protein and fat. It’s a food product that’s sustainably produced across Welsh and UK farms and I encourage you to include it in your diet,” he added.
I always buy local when I get the chance and strongly urge people to use local suppliers for dairy products such as Birchgrove Dairy, a family owned business within Swansea East.

The United Nations FAO (Food and Agriculture Organisation) launched the idea of a World Milk Day back in 2001 when it was asked to propose a specific day on which all aspects of milk could be celebrated. It now provides an opportunity to focus attention and to publicise activities connected with milk and the dairy industry.
