Investment for Welsh railway stations welcomed

A £24m European-backed programme to transform five railway stations across Wales has been announced by Transport Minister, Edwina Hart.

The money, which includes £17m from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), will be used to improve customer facilities, access, capacity and park and ride spaces at Aberystwyth, Pontypridd, Port Talbot Parkway, Rhyl and Ystrad Mynach stations.

The Welsh Government will be contributing £5.1m towards the programme, while Network Rail will be providing £0.7m, Arriva Trains Wales £0.4m. Neath Port Talbot council are also contributing £0.5m towards the Port Talbot Parkway scheme, and steel for that project will be donated in kind by local steel company Tata. The work announced today is part of a wider £39m programme, with £21m ERDF backing, to improve rail stations across Wales.
