Swansea East Assembly Member Mike Hedges has welcomed the news that a further £5million worth of funding for additional apprenticeship places for newly recruited young people aged 16-24 will be provided by the Welsh Labour Government.
The news was announced earlier this week by Welsh Labour’s Deputy Minister for Skills, Jeff Cuthbert.
Speaking at the National Training Federation Wales conference in Llandudno, the Deputy Minister also set a challenge for the Work Based Learning Network to engage with those employers who do not already offer apprenticeships and find more opportunities for the young people of Wales.
The Welsh Labour Government offers a number of initiatives to encourage employers to recruit more apprentices, including:
• The Young Recruits Programme – An all Wales programme that provides funding to employers offering high quality apprenticeship programmes who recruit and train additional young apprentices (16-24 yrs old);
• The Pathways to Apprenticeship Programme – An employer led, one year, full-time intensive training programme. It delivers underpinning knowledge, work experience skills and qualifications;
• In collaboration with Careers Wales, the Welsh Government has developed a one-stop online matching service for employers that will enable them to find suitable apprentices and aspiring apprentices. The Apprenticeship Matching Service provides potential apprentices looking to join the programme with the ability to apply online for Foundation Apprenticeships, Apprenticeships and Higher Apprenticeships vacancies.
