Mike Hedges MS warns of new scam targeting unpaid carers
Mike Hedges MS, Welsh Labour’s Member of the Senedd for Swansea East is warning unpaid carers of a new scam that is targeting them over the £500 payment they’re set to receive from the Welsh Labour Government.
The Welsh Government has issued a fresh scam warning after they were made aware that scammers are asking people to share their bank details in order to receive the £500 payment, which will be paid in recognition of the pivotal role carers have played during the pandemic.
Mike Hedges MS and the Welsh Government are warning that this is not how unpaid carers claim the payment. Eligible unpaid carers will be able to submit their claim to local authorities later this year and further details on how and when to register for the payment will be available shortly.
Mike Hedges MS said:
“Unpaid in carers in Swansea East have played a pivotal role throughout the pandemic – they have gone above and beyond to care for family or friends.
“It is unacceptable that scammers are targeting those set to receive the payment – the £500 payment is designed to go some way to support during this cost-of-living crisis.
“If you are contacted by someone asking you to share your bank details, please don’t. You will be able to submit a claim to City and County of Swansea later this year.”
4346 unpaid carers in Swansea are set to receive the payment in recognition of the pivotal role they have played during the pandemic.
