MIKE HEDGES MS WELCOMES NEWS THAT SWANSEA HAS BEEN SUCCESFUL IN BIDDING FOR EXTRA FUNDING TO PROMOTE ACTIVE TRAVEL AND CYCLING
Speaking from his Morriston Office, Local MS Mike Hedges said… ‘this is good news to Swansea, and as both Park and Ride sites are in my constituency, good news my constituents! Following the restrictions on using public transport arising from the coronavirus, a lot of people have been taking up cycling, and I am pleased to see the Welsh Government supporting local councils in putting in place facilities that will encourage people to take up cycling to work.
I congratulate Swansea council on the success with their applications and look forward to seeing the new facilities being used in the near future.’
Lee Waters, the Welsh Government’s Deputy Transport Minister, has announced funding for temporary measures that would improve the conditions for sustainable and active travel.
Coronavirus restrictions have led to significant reductions in traffic on roads, fewer people using public transport, and more people walking and cycling. The Welsh Government’s call to action is driven by the expectation that social distancing will need to be observed for months to come, as well as uncertainty around future transport patterns.
The lockdown has also seen a huge uptake in digital remote working, bringing the need to travel long distances for work into question.
Swansea Council have been successful for 2 projects to increase the cycling facilities within the City.
