Mike Hedges welcomes news that people seeking Gender reassignment will be able to access services in Wales
Mike Hedges AM said… I have met members of the Transgender Community in Swansea and know the difficulties they face. One of these difficulties has now been reduced as a result of this Welsh Government announcement.
From this autumn, people requiring gender identity treatment will be able to access more of their treatment in Wales, the Welsh Labour Government has announced. This new Welsh Team will enable people to access specialist support and treatment within Wales. I am sure that this will be a great relief for people living in Swansea. I hope that their journeys are easier as a result.
The new Welsh Gender Team will start seeing patients at the end of October, allowing transgender people to access the care they need closer to home.
Currently, all patients who present with gender dysphoria are referred to the London Gender Identity Clinic, where they are assessed and provided with a treatment plan.
Work is continuing with Health Boards and the General Practitioners Committee to develop a fully integrated gender identity service in Wales.
As part of the Welsh Labour Government’s commitment to improving health and wellbeing for all, £500,000 has been invested annually to improve gender identity services in Wales.
