Local Labour AM Mike Hedges AM proudly marked International Women’s Day by backing a call-to-action to Press for Progress on tackling gender inequality here and around the globe.
International Women’s Day, which takes place annually on 8th March, is a global day which celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
In Wales, the Welsh Labour Government has a track record of ensuring that women’s voices are front and centre in our politics and in our policies.
Despite the huge strides that have been made here in Wales, there is still much work that remains to be done and challenges to be overcome.
Research shows that the pay gap between men and women in full time work in Wales currently stands at £1.81 an hour.
Meanwhile, The World Economic Forum’s 2017 Global Gender Gap Report detailed how we are still 200 years away from achieving global gender parity, if we fail to take action.
A wide range of events took place at the Senedd throughout the week to mark IWD 208, with Deputy Presiding Officer, Ann Jones AM, hosting an event entitled The Women’s Suffrage Movement in Wales.
AM for Delyn, Hannah Blythyn, hosted an event to look at how ‘Wales can lead the way on equal pay’ with speakers from business, government and trade unions all involved in a lively debate.

“I am proud of the work the Welsh Labour Government has done and continues to do to tackle gender inequality, but more must be done and we all have a role to play.”
“The gender pay gap is just one of those issues and it is up to all of us to press for progress, and ensure that women and girls have the same opportunities to fulfil their potential, creating a Wales where everyone can aspire and achieve.”
The UK’s first Purple Plaque to commemorate the work of remarkable women was also unveiled in honor of the late Labour AM, Val Feld.
“I was delighted to join my colleagues in celebrating Val’s contribution to Welsh life and, like Val, I am proud to be part of a legislature that has a strong record on women’s representation and one that is leading the way on equal rights.”
