At The National Assembly Mike Hedges AM congratulated Agencies working with Homeless People in Swansea on their work and asked the Housing Minister what support Welsh Government is providing to Councils to build Council Homes and what support is provided to agencies with people who are sleeping rough.
He congratulated agencies such as Caerlas, The Wallich and The Sisters of Mercy who support people in a housing crisis and sleeping rough in Swansea.
He said…. ‘These organisations are all all doing a phenomenally good job’.
Speaking after the debate, Mike Hedges AM said… ‘Rough sleeping is a huge problem at this time of year, and my office has seen a great response to appeals for warm clothing etc. this however is only very short term support; the 40 extra beds for rough sleepers is to be welcomed too, but more needs to be done to provide significant long term support for people in Housing Crisis through the provision
I again wish to pay tribute to the organisations who provide support to rough sleepers in Swansea.
One of the best way that we can support people out of housing Crisis is through building of extra council houses. I welcome the support outlined by the Minister and offer congratulations to Council such as Swansea who are now embarking on ambitious council house building program, with the first two sites being within my own constituency.
Future Council House building is vital to addressing the Homelessness in the City of Swansea, and I look forward to future council house building schemes in the area.
