Mike Hedges AM welcomes announcment that Best cancer care is paramount
The Welsh Labour Government’s revised Cancer Delivery Plan has been launched by Health Secretary Vaughan Gething.
Mike said… ‘I welcome this news which is particularly good news for people who suffer from Cancer; the increase of £62 million spent on Cancer services over the past years is evidence of this Welsh Labour Government commitment to improving Cancer care in Wales. The revised plan builds on the work already undertaken to ensure that people in Wales get the best possible Cancer services. I am confident that significant improvements in Cancer services will follow.’
The revised plan which has been developed by the Cancer Implementation Group with relevant stakeholders, including the third sector, makes commitments to continue to:
- · Improve survival rates for cancer.
- · Reduce early death caused by the disease.
- · Close the gap with the best providers of cancer care in Europe.
The plan focusses on delivering better results for those with lung cancer; improving early detection of cancer through better access to diagnostics and ensuring the levels of care that cancers patients in Wales receive from the NHS are of the highest standard.
Cancer survival rates in Wales continue to increase year on year and early death through cancer has declined by around 14 per cent over ten years. Overall scores given by patients in Wales to the Welsh Government’s cancer patient experience survey were positive. Investment from the Welsh Labour Government has meant that spending on cancer services has risen from £347 million in 2011-12 to £409 million in 2014-15. Nearly £10 million has been provided for replacement linear accelerators and the Welsh Labour Government fully supports the new £200 million Velindre Cancer Centre, with £15 million allocated in the draft budget for better diagnostics.
However, the Welsh Labour Government believes that there is always more to do to ensure that we deliver the best possible cancer care for people here in Wales.
