Press release on revised Blue Badge scheme

Mike Hedges welcomes news that Blue Badge eligibility criteria to be expanded

The Blue Badge Scheme in Wales has been expanded from 1st October to include those experiencing temporary but substantial injuries or illness, Welsh Labour’s Economy and Infrastructure Secretary Ken Skates has announced.

Mike said.. I greatly welcome this news as I am aware of how frustrating it can be for people or families of people affected by debilitating and serious health conditions that severely impact on their mobility for short periods of time but who previously did not qualify for a badge. I am sure that the scheme will provide significant relief to these people.

The expanded scheme, which provides parking concessions to people with disabilities, will now offer temporary, 12 month badges for those recovering from or awaiting treatment for serious illnesses or injuries.  Examples of this may include:

  • A person recovering from complex leg fractures sometimes managed with external fixators for periods of well over a year
  • A person recovering from stroke or head injury that has impacted on their mobility
  • A person recovering from spinal trauma which impacts their mobility
  • A person with a serious illness where the treatment may be debilitating, for example treatment for cancer
  • A person with severe functional leg impairments who is awaiting or who has undergone joint replacement (e.g. unilateral or bilateral hip, knee, etc)

Wales now has the widest eligibility criteria in the UK as part of the Welsh Labour Government’s work to make Wales as accessible as possible for all.

Further details about the scheme can be found here.
