Mike Hedges AM welcomes news that Welsh Labour Government announces cap on rail fares
The Welsh Labour Government has announced that regulated rail fares in Wales will not rise above the rate of inflation until at least October 2018.
Mike Hedges AM said… I greatly welcome this news as it means people who commute by train can plan their budgets for the year ahead in the knowledge that there will be no substantial increases in the price of their train journeys. It also makes travel by rail attractive compared to other transport alternatives where prices may well rise by more than the rate of inflation.’
This means that from January 2017 the maximum increase that Arriva Trains Wales can apply to regulated rail fares will be 1.9% – 0% above the Retail Price Index rate of inflation.
The announcement from the Welsh Labour Government means that existing rail users have continuity and that train travel remains attractive and affordable in Wales. Rail fare increases from January 2018 until the end of the current franchise – in October 2018 – will also be capped at the rate of inflation
