An £18m investment boost from the Welsh Government to improve equipment and facilities for the NHS in Wales has been given the thumbs-up by local Swansea AM Mike Hedges.
The investment, which was announced earlier this month by Health Minister Mark Drakeford and Finance Minister Jane Hutt, will help to ensure the nation’s health service is fit for the challenges of the 21st century.
One of the biggest beneficiaries of the funding boost will be Swansea’s Morriston Hospital, which is set to receive £9.5m to bring forward a programme of developments, including construction of a new accommodation block for clinical support along with new accommodation for diabetic services.
Welcoming the funding boost, Labour AM Mike Hedges said:
“At a time when we’re seeing political scaremongering from other political parties over the future and funding of the NHS, this investment flies in the face of those critics and shows local residents that the Welsh Government is committed to investing in and improving our most valued public service – the NHS.”
Other key hospitals and services set to benefit from a share of the £18m allocation include £3m to support Hywel Dda’s neonatal, obstetrics and paediatric services; £2m to support a diagnostic hub at in Llantrisant’s Royal Glamorgan Hospital; £2.5m to support the provision of new diagnostic equipment across Wales; and £1m to support the new Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service for patients in need of time-critical and life-saving treatment.
