Mike & Julie back new Domestic Abuse Bill

Swansea AMs Mike Hedges and Julie James have welcomed new legislation that aims to tackle domestic abuse and sexual violence in Wales.

A new Bill from the Welsh Labour Government aimed at confronting gender-based violence, domestic abuse and sexual violence, has been introduced this week to the National Assembly for Wales. The Bill recognises the wide reach of different forms of domestic abuse, and aims to protect all members of society by placing a statutory responsibility on the public sector to improve their responses to violence and abuse. This includes introducing measures to:

• Promote awareness of, and prevent, protect and support victims of gender-based violence, domestic abuse and sexual violence;
• Strengthen the strategic leadership and accountability for gender-based violence, domestic abuse and sexual violence; and
• Improve the consistency, quality and join-up of service provision in Wales.

Speaking on the new Bill, Swansea East AM Mike Hedges said:

“There is never an excuse for domestic abuse or violence. I strongly believe that this Bill is a positive step in addressing the abuses that unfortunately still exists in our society.”

Swansea West AM Julie James added:

“Domestic abuse and sexual violence must not be tolerated. I welcome the introduction of this new law and that it particularly acknowledges that violence against women accounts for a disproportionate number of incidents.”
