News that Wales’ four police forces are set to benefit from Welsh Government funding worth £15.8million to keep 500 PCSOs out on the beat has been given the thumbs up today by Swansea Labour AM, Mike Hedges.
The funding boost was announced earlier this week by Local Government and Minister, Lesley Griffiths, as part of the Welsh Government’s agenda to make communities throughout Swansea and Wales safe, free from crime and anti-social behaviour. In addition to the £15.8m funding, the Welsh Government will also be giving an extra £257,000 to continue to fund seven Welsh-based PCSOs with the British Transport Police (BTP).
As part of its Programme for Government commitments, the Welsh Government successfully delivered early on its pledge to fund and train 500 PCSOs by the end of the currently Assembly term, after just two years in government.
Welcoming the funding announcement, Swansea AM Mike Hedges said:
“From speaking to residents in communities throughout Swansea, I’ve heard time and time again about the valuable role PCSOs play in keeping our streets and neighbourhoods safer, but also in making them feel safer.
“PCSOs are highly visible, they engaging with people, and they provide reassurance towards deterring and tackling anti-social behaviour, which is why I know Swansea residents will be pleased to see this additional funding pumped into keeping them on the streets and out on the beat.”
