£1.8m funding boost for Swansea roads welcomed

Swansea Labour AMs Mike Hedges and Julie James have today warmly welcomed the announcement that Swansea is set to get a £1.8m funding boost to improve transport infrastructure and services in the City.

The funding was announced earlier this week by Transport Minister Edwina Hart under the Welsh Government’s Local Transport Fund (LTF), which saw funding worth £34.5m allocated to 96 transport projects throughout Wales.

Under the £1.8m boost, £1.5m will be allocated for the creation of a new Morfa Distributor Road to alleviate city centre traffic pressure, and £300,000 will be allocated for a new Swansea Urban Cycle Network to promote cycling and sustainable transport within the City.

Commenting on the news, Swansea East AM Mike Hedges said:

“I’m delighted to welcome the latest funding boost for Swansea, which will help us to improve and strengthen our transport services and infrastructure for residents, road users, pedestrians and cyclists.    

“I’m particularly pleased to welcome the £1.5m funding to create a new Morfa Distributor Road to improve transport access and links between the city centre and Liberty Stadium. The investment will help to regenerate the Tawe riverside corridor as well as help to alleviate the current high levels of traffic and air quality issues faced by residents living in the Hafod.”

Speaking on the Urban Cycle Network funding, Swansea West AM Julie James added:

“As a thriving and vibrant City, we must look at improving and promoting all aspects of public and sustainable transport to meet our growing needs.

“Cycling isn’t just good for the environment, but it’s also a great way of exercising, getting outdoors and exploring different parts of Swansea, which is why I’m pleased to welcome this funding to set up a new Swansea Urban Cycle Network.”
