Radical proposals designed to further tackle anti-social behaviour and domestic violence in the Welsh housing sector has today been welcomed by Swansea’s local Labour AM, Mike Hedges.
The proposals, which are included in the Welsh Government’s Renting Homes White Paper, were highlighted earlier this week by Housing Minister Carl Sargeant to coincide with the international “16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence” campaign.
One of the major proposals outlined in the White Paper includes a proposal to require a ‘prohibited conduct term’ in every tenancy contract to enable landlords to take effective action against the perpetrators of domestic abuse and anti-social behaviour. Anyone breaching this term in their tenancy agreement could be liable to eviction while in cases of domestic abuse, the victim and any children would be able to remain in their home.
Speaking on the Renting Homes White Paper, Swansea East AM Mike Hedges said:
“In any modern and civilised society, no person should have to put up with the threat of domestic violence or anti-social behaviour. The new proposals in the Renting Homes White Paper are something that I full support and as the local AM, I remain committed to the campaign of tackling and preventing these appalling crimes in our Swansea neighbourhoods and communities.”
