Welsh Government announces purchase of Cardiff Airport

Welsh Labour’s First Minister has announced this month that the Welsh Government has purchased Cardiff Airport for a total investment of £52 million. This follows a period of due diligence and negotiation with TBI, the airport’s previous owner.

Announcing the purchase, First Minister Carwyn Jones said:

“Cardiff Airport is a vital gateway to Wales for business, tourists and general travellers alike. It is essential that its future is secured and that we develop high quality sustainable services. The Airport will not be operated by the Welsh Government. It will be managed at arm’s length from government on a commercial basis and, over time, I expect to see a return to the public purse on the investment. A Chief Executive of the airport will be announced in due course. In the meantime, I am delighted that Lord Rowe-Beddoes has agreed to serve as Chairman of the Airport Board.”

Swansea East AM Mike Hedges added:

“I’m delighted and welcome today’s news that the Welsh Government has now purchased Cardiff Airport after completing the due diligence process with the airport’s now former owners, TBI. “As Wales’ only international airport, it’s essential that Cardiff Airport is now run as a successful business in order to increase tourism, promote Wales aboard, and help with the economic regeneration and development of South and West Wales.”
